Chapter 12

Drake

"Thanks for coming by," Taylor said, walking up to Drake and shaking his hand when he walked into the lobby of Patterson Place Hotel.

Violet had told Drake a lot about Taylor and Blue's hotel, but it was Drake's first time to see the interior for himself.

It wasn't a Holiday Inn.

It was unique, custom, eclectic, vintage, first-class, beautiful. Everything was brand new, but Drake had the distinct sensation that he had stepped back in time. The floors were marble and there were wood and iron accents everywhere, including a grand spiral staircase that curved upward to the second-story loft.

Drake knew at a glance that Taylor had spared no expense when he had that staircase built. It was made of African Mahogany and had been carefully crafted by a skilled carpenter. The chandelier was probably meant to be the showstopper in the room, but for Drake, it was the stairs.

"You're welcome," Drake said, as they greeted each other. "Thanks for having me. Your stairs are really beautiful. The whole place is."

"Thank you," Taylor said. "She's my baby, that's for sure."

"Goodness, I've never stayed in a place like this."

"Not many people have," a lady said, walking by and overhearing. She smiled at Taylor and gave him a wave as she passed.

"Thanks Carol," Taylor said. "See you tomorrow."

She nodded and smiled and went on her way, headed out the door.

"Shall we?" Taylor asked, motioning toward the right side of the lobby. Drake gave him a nod, and the two of them took off toward what Drake assumed was Taylor's office.

They passed a set of elevators on their way back, and Taylor motioned to them. "I'll take you upstairs for a tour when we're done in the office," Taylor said.

"How many stories?" Drake asked.

"Eight," Taylor said.

"I remembered you saying you had about forty rooms," Drake said. "I didn't realize you'd have eight stories."

"All the rooms are pretty spacious," Taylor said. "The sixth floor is mostly public area, and the eighth floor only has two suites, and one of them is mine and Blue's."

Taylor showed Drake into his office, and for the next fifteen minutes, the gentlemen spoke about some custom shelves and a desk. Drake had the idea to make the desk L-shaped and curved, and Taylor instantly went for it, saying he wished he had thought of it himself. Drake made notes and sketches and took measurements while the two of them decided what would best fit the room.

Drake had just put his pencil away and closed his portfolio when Taylor said, "I hear you've been talking to my sister-in-law quite a bit."

The two men were standing in the center of the office, and Drake took a deep breath at the mention of Violet. He rubbed his forehead. "I have," he said with a slight nod, trying to appear calm.

Drake had just seen Violet before he came to the hotel, and she was still fresh in his mind. Honestly, he was wrecked by the encounter. He was supposed to start a job at her house the following day, and he wasn't even sure if he could go through with it.
